Understanding the Sheldon Scale for coin grading
What is Coin Grading?
Coin grading is the process of determining a coin's condition and assigning it a numerical value. This helps establish authenticity, value, and desirability among collectors.
The Sheldon Scale
The Sheldon Scale, developed in 1949 by Dr. William Sheldon, ranges from 1 to 70. Higher numbers indicate better preservation and eye appeal.
MS70MS-70 (Mint State Perfect): No post-mint damage or blemishes visible even under magnification.
MS65MS-65 (Mint State 65): Above average eye appeal. May have small contact marks or slight weakness.
MS60MS-60 (Mint State 60): Uncirculated but may have unsightly contact marks, slightly stained, or poor luster.
AU58AU-58 (About Uncirculated 58): Light wear only on highest points. Nearly full luster with few blemishes.
AU55AU-55 (About Uncirculated 55): Light wear visible on highest points. Eye appeal near MS level.
AU50AU-50 (About Uncirculated 50): Slight wear on most of the highest points. Half of original luster remains.
EF45EF-45 (Extremely Fine 45): Light wear on tops of ridges and in recesses. All details sharp.
EF40EF-40 (Extremely Fine 40): Light wear on highest points. Details still sharp with clear design.
VF35VF-35 (Very Fine 35): Moderate wear on exposed surfaces. All lettering sharp.
VF30VF-30 (Very Fine 30): Same as VF-35 with slightly more wear.
VF25VF-25 (Very Fine 25): Moderate wear on entire surface. Some lettering weak.
VF20VF-20 (Very Fine 20): Moderate wear with more pronounced softness.
